The Association was founded by Don Bosco to honor Our Lady under the title of Help of Christians. Its headquarters were at the Basilica that he dedicated to her in the Valdocco section of Turin, where he had his Oratory. Now, the Association has spread all over the world, but its spiritual home is still there in Valdocco.

The Association was officially recognized as part of the Salesian Family in 1989.
