The New General Council

The 24th General Chapter held three elections during the months of March and April 1996 for the Rector Major, the Vicar General and departmental councilors and the regional councilors. The new General Council will serve a six-year term from1996 to 2002.

The following are brief biographical notes on the new Councilors who enter the General Council for the first time.

 

1. Fr. Antoni DOMENECH , Councilor for Youth Ministry.

Born at Barcelona, Spain, April 12, 1943, he attended the Salesian school there and made his first profession on August 16, 1959. He was ordained March 1, 1969. Later, he took part in the 21st and 23rd General Chapters as delegate of his province, and on June 10, 1994, was appointed provincial of Barcelona. Others...

 

2. Fr. Giovanni MAZZALI, Economer General.

Giovanni Mazzali was born at Turin on February 1, 1947. He made his religious profession August 16, 1964. After the study of philosophy and pedagogy and practical training, he studied theology at Maynooth in Ireland and was ordained at Cumiana, Italy, December 7, 1974.

On May 18, 1990, the Rector Major with his council appointed him provincial of the Genoa Province. Others...

3. Fr. Helvécio BARUFFI, Councilor for the Latin American (Southern Cone) Region

Fr. Helvécio Baruffi was born July 18, 1944, at Luiz Alves in the state of Santa Caterina, Brazil. He made his novitiate in the house of Taquari and his first profession there on January 31, 1964. 4. Fr. Pascual CHAVEZ VILLANUEVA, Councilor for the Interamerican Region.

Born on December 14, 1947, at Catorce in the Province of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Pascual Chavez was 11 when he entered the school of Saltillo. From there he went on to the novitiate of Coaclaco and made his first profession on August 16, 1964. After philosophy and practical training he studied theology at Guadalajara and was ordained on December 8, 1973. In 1989 he was appointed provincial of the province of Guadalajara, an office he held for six years. When the news reached him that the GC24 had elected him to the General Council, he was in Spain concluding his studies for a Doctorate in Sacred Scripture. Others...

5. Fr. Joaquim D'SOUZA, Councilor for the Australasian Region.

Joaquim D'Souza was born at Parel, Bombay, on March 22, 1945, and made his first religious profession on May 24, 1963. On November 30, 1993, he be came provincial. He was a delegate to the GC23. Others...

6. Fr. Filiberto RODRIGUEZ, Councilor for the Region of Western Europe.

Filiberto Rodriguez was born at Valsalabroso (Salamanca, Spain) December 8, 1942. His eldest sister is a Daughter of Charity, another is a Daughter of Mary Help of Christians, and three of his brothers became Salesians (one of whom is deceased). He made his first profession on August 16, 1960. After philosophy and practical training he studied theology at Salamanca and was ordained February 22, 1970. 7. Fr. Albert VAN HECKE, Councilor for the Region of Northern Europe

Born September 1, 1941, at Sleidinge, Belgium, Albert Van Hecke made his first profession on August 25, 1962. He concluded the usual course of formation and was ordained at Oud-Heverlee on September 12, 1970. After being a member of the provincial council from 1984, he was appointed provincial in 1990.
