From Don Bosco Technical Institute (

It is with very heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Bosco Tech’s own Fr. Bill Schafer on Saturday, February 2. His presence, long-cherished by all at the Tech, will be sorely missed.

Fr. Schafer was first assigned to Bosco Tech in 1962, shortly after his ordination. At the school, he served as a math and physics teacher and as vice-principal until June 1968. During most of the next four years, he served as vice principal and principal of Salesian High School in northern California. In 1972, he returned to Bosco Tech as the high school principal and the college dean of student affairs.

Following his election as president of Bosco Tech in 1979, Fr. Schafer presided over the beginnings of pivotal developments in the school’s history. Under his direction, the school began its first annual fundraising campaign and created its first computer lab, ensuring that each student acquired computer literacy.

In 1985, Fr. Schafer left Bosco Tech to serve as the Provincial of the Salesian Western Region. After leading the region in that role until 1997, he was assigned to the Salesian Boys and Girls Club in Boyle Heights.

He retired to Bosco Tech in 2010, but remained a very active participant in the school’s outreach efforts. His ability to remember individual graduates, and the ongoing relationships he maintained with those alumni and their families, made him a life-long mentor to many and invaluable to the school’s continued alumni relations program.

Most recently, Fr. Schafer could be found in Tech Hall every day at lunchtime, checking in with students and gently inquiring about their academic progress and personal successes.

Please join us in praying for the Salesian community and his family at this difficult time. The following services are planned; please call Ms. Teresa Herrera, Director of Alumni Relations, at (626) 940-2026 for specifics on each event.

• Viewing and Rosary-Wednesday, February 6, from 4 to 9 p.m. in the Fr. Felix Penna chapel (the Rosary will be said at approximately 6 p.m.).
• Funeral Mass-Thursday, February 7, at 10:40 a.m. in Tech Hall.
• Burial-Friday, February 8, at the Salesian Cemetery in Richmond, California.

From the Office of the Provincial
February 2, 2013.

Today, we are met with the sudden news of the death of our Fr. William (Bill) Schafer, SDB.  Fr. Bill had a cold, which turned out to be the flu, for too long.  His doctor sent him to the San Gabriel Valley Hospital two days ago.  Complications from the severe flu affected his lungs.

Fr. Bill was unconscious for several hours and in the presence of his sister, his nephews, and Salesians, God called Fr. Bill Schafer to Himself today, Saturday, at 5:00 pm.  Fr. Bill was 81 years of age.  Funeral arrangements are pending.  We pray for Fr. Bill's eternal happiness.
