Late in the 18th century, Franciscan padres planted a Mission here, near Whittier Narrows, where the San Gabriel River leaves its valley to flow down past Long Beach to the Pacific. Later, floods forced relocation to a site further to the north, in San Gabriel. Rosemead has grown in a few decades from a dairy farming and small oil production area to a busy residential and commercial center. |
