Archdiocese of Los Angeles

St. Joseph’s was founded as a house of formation for Salesian Brothers in 1958. In 1960 a high school program was established for youth interested in the Salesian Brotherhood. In 1977 a retreat program for grammar school and high school groups, and young adult groups was added. In 1979 the seminary program was relocated to Bellflower, California.. St. Joseph’s was now a full service retreat center for youth and young adults. Today over 12,000 young people come to the Center annually for spiritual retreats and formation.

In 1989 a novitiate was established for men preparing Salesian religious life. The Salesian formation program was expanded in 1997 to include the candidacy and prenovitiate formation programs for the Salesians of Don Bosco.

In 1996 the Salesian Province Youth Ministry office was established at St. Joseph’s to coordinate the youth ministry and educational programs of the Salesians in the Western United States.
