San Francisco grew from a tiny bayside village known as Yerba Buena ("Good Grass"). '49ers coming for gold fueled its growth. For decades after that, it  welcomed visitors from all over the world sailing through her famous Golden Gate. Now, it is a financial and cultural center in the first rank of America's windows to the Pacific Rim.

The city welcomed the first Salesians in 1897.
