Scholarship Fund

A young woman—we will call her Jennifer—from one of our California Salesian Schools will be attending the Catholic College of her choice this fall. While this may sound like a typical story, it is anything but!

You see, Jennifer was raised by her single father for most of her life. As the oldest of three children, Jennifer helped her father look after her younger brother and sister. However, even with her many responsibilities at home, Jennifer was an exceptional student.

While Jennifer was a bright student, finances would not allow her to receive the Salesian education she so desperately wanted. Happily, Jennifer received a scholarship from the Rinaldi Trust each of the four years she attended high school. The Salesians maintain the Rinaldi Trust to help students like Jennifer.

The Trust gives scholarships to the students in Salesian schools who are most in need. By making a gift to the Rinaldi Trust, you will support the Salesian mission of providing a good education for all children.

The Trust was named for the Blessed Phillip Rinaldi because of his tireless efforts in providing youth with a good education, especially those most in need. Philip Rinaldi became the third successor of Saint John Bosco– the last successor personally trained by Don Bosco–and led the Salesian Congregation as Rector Major from April 16, 1910 to December 5, 1931, 21 years.

Many things have changed since Phillip Rinaldi was serving those looking for a good education in a friendly place. Some things have not changed. Namely, the high cost of education. Without your help, many students won’t be able to go to Salesian schools.

Money from the Rinaldi Trust provides scholarships to many Salesian students throughout the province. In most instances, without a scholarship these students will not receive a Salesian Education.

The Rinaldi Trust granted the following scholarships in the 2004-2005 school year:

  • Don Bosco Technical Institute, Rosemead, CA. 8 students were awarded scholarships for a total of $27,520 in assistance.
  • Saint Francis High School, Watsonville, CA. 1 student received a scholarship for a total of $4,500 in assistance.
  • Saint John Bosco High School, Bellflower, CA. 7 students received scholarships for a total of $26,800 is assistance.
  • Salesian High School, Los Angeles, CA. 6 students received scholarships for a total of $20,375 in assistance.
  • Salesian High School, Richmond, CA. 11 students received scholarships for a total of $24,300 in assistance.

The total of awarded scholarships in 2004-2005 was $103,495. These scholarships allowed 33 students to receive a Salesian education who would not otherwise have been able to attend.

The Salesians of St. John Bosco established this fund in 1977. The generous contributions of donors support The Rinaldi Trust. Support of the Trust allows the Western Province to provide these scholarships.

Your generosity allows these students to succeed!

You can contribute to the Rinaldi Trust and assist future students who are in financial need by sending your gifts made payable to the Salesian Society to the following.

Piperni Trust

After many years of working in the Lord's vineyard, some of our veteran Brothers and Fathers need special care.

Your generous gift will help these servants continue to minister with dignity, as best they can, until the time comes for them to say, "Now, Lord, you may dismiss your servant."

Don Bosco Associates

These are our most generous donors. The Don Bosco Associates are donors who make annual gifts of $1,000 or more to the Provincial’s Fund of the Salesian Society. The Provincial directs the proceeds of the fund to areas where the Province is most in need. As stewards of the Province, the members of the Associates gather at these events to share in the spirit of St. John Bosco and learn of the progress of the numerous projects of the Province.

Use this General donation form, and choose Don Bosco Associates.

Contact the Development Office if you would like to receive information about the next Don Bosco Associates celebration. Members of the Don Bosco Associates will automatically receive invitations to Don Bosco Associates' events.
